The Grand Island Inclusive Recreation Project (GIRP) is desigGIRP logoned to
support individuals of all ages with disabilities who may need an accommodation to access a typical recreational activity of their choice. GIRP partners include Independence Rising, Grand Island Parks & Recreation, Grand Island YMCA, and Grand Island area Boy Scouts of America. GIRP steering committee partners include representatives from Central Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, Grand Island Public Schools, People First of Nebraska, Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska Inc., and The Arc of Central Nebraska.

Independence Rising is the lead agency for GIRP and assists the partner
agencies in developing accommodations for persons with disabilities. Independence Rising is able to provide leisure companions and volunteers when individual support is necessary.

GIRP provides a model where everyone, regardless of ability level can participate together in the same activities.

How does someone participate in GIRP?

  • Find a program or activity you would like to participate in sponsored by one of the GIRP Partners
  • Contact the agency or organization that runs that program, or Independence Rising if the program is not through a GIRP partner agency.
  • Fill out the registration form and the GIRP questionnaire. Register early! Allow two weeks for the rest of the planning to occur.
  • As needed, meet with the agency inclusive recreation coordinator, a
representative from Independence Rising, and the activity leader to coordinate your participation in the activity.
  • If necessary, Independence Rising will match you with a volunteer Leisure Companion.
  • Begin the activity/program! We will evaluate the accommodations as we go and at the end of the program.

GIRP participants are responsible for any programmatic fees associated
with their recreational choice. An accommodation plan is available
free of charge. Independence Rising trains and supervises all Leisure Companion volunteers used for individual recreational support. GIRP makes it possible for any person (with or without a disability) to enjoy recreation within their community.
